Having demonstrated against the ills of the world the protesters adjourned to the pubs and coffee shops. It was too much trouble to take their signs and placards with them, too inconvenient, even though they were ‘passionate’ about the environment, ‘cared deeply’ about the planet, and thought that litter-dropping and fly-tipping were outrages against Nature and Society. So they left the stuff there for someone else to clean up: ‘the authorities’, the council, the road sweepers, whose job it was after all. When society was really fair and really equal, when socialism was finally achieved, then it would all be different. Nobody would need to protest and therefore nobody would need to carry placards around, and if they did, there would be a properly funded street cleaning service to follow behind and clear up the mess. But until that day, comrades…
